I hope your fall is off to a great start with your choir(s). There are new singers in your group and many veterans as well. Time to mix them up a bit so they can get to know each other a little better. Singing in a choir for young people is, first and foremost, all about relationships. This will look different for each singer but the more everyone gets to know each other and begins to understand the journey of each singer, the more they will enjoy making music with each other and with you. I encourage you to be intentional about building relationships between singers and with you. The activities can be fun and silly or a little more introspective. Please check out my previous blogs regarding all levels of team building.

Today I’m giving you a great “getting to know you”, “let’s be silly”, “let’s get you moving” activity to be used during the first month of rehearsals. This activity is called Bubble Gum Challenge and can be completed in the classroom BUT I would suggest the gym or large grassy area outside. This is a race. If you can add incentives, perhaps prizes, for the first 5 winners, that would be even better.

Bubble Gum ChallengeThe very first thing you do is hand out bubble gum to each singer before you begin explaining the challenge. The singers will need to have the gum well-chewed (is that even a word?) before the activity begins.

Directions to the singers:

  • 1. The goal is to complete a list of activities on a sheet of paper and get signatures of other singers who participated or witnessed each activity.
  • 2. A singer cannot sign the sheet of another singer more than one time.
  • 3. This is a race and the first 5 singers to complete the sheet will be the winners and receive a prize.
  • 4. Make sure you follow the directions for each activity carefully including who signs each line.
  • 5. The signature needs to be legible.Make sure I can read the signatures.
  • 6. Have fun, let loose and be silly!

Here we go.

Hand out the sheet and a pencil to each singer. “Ready, set, go!”

Make sure you have a camera and take lots of pictures and video. It’s fun to watch!
