In one of his best carol settings, Dan Forrest incorporates a wide variety of choral techniques to grow the piece from a sensitive, thoughtful opening into a dramatic crescendo that cannot help but inspire the choral ensemble and audience alike. Once it reaches its thrilling climax, it gingerly returns to a sensitive, emotional ending just as peacefully as it began. This piece takes a full 5 minutes to perform as part of a concert or worship service, but it will most certainly be worth the investment in time, considering its meaningful expression of this classic text.

The Bottom Line

Pros
This beloved carol is presented in a way that moves from simplicity to dramatic climax (and back) that audiences will love.
Cons
This is a long piece (5+ minutes) but is worth it if well-programmed.
