It is difficult to analyze the power of this anthem. Haunting accompaniment at the beginning in open fifths leads immediately into beautiful melody with a text with which all can identify. When you've been through a personal struggle and have, by the grace of God, emerged safely on the other side, this anthem speaks peace and joy to you.
Musically, it provides an opportunity for the group to move together through some gentle rhythms, that, when relaxed, sing much better than when forced. Great piece for choir, ensemble, even for smaller groupings such as a quartet. It works.

The Bottom Line
Pros
Melody which remains past rehearsal, great teaching text
Cons
Make certain to learn rhythms correctly the first time. Once learned incorrectly, they are doubly difficult to fix.
