This jubilant new choral setting of Psalm 96 is set in a spirited 6/8 meter. Written in an A-B-A form, the first section has an engaging and robust melody which invites us to "Sing to the Lord a new song!" The middle section is a cappella, in 4/4, evoking a more reflective mode asking us to "worship the Lord in the beauty of Holiness." Joyful and festive!

This reviewer wonders if perhaps the tempo marking for the "A" section (and the recap) is incorrectly marked 60/minute. Described by the publisher as "jubilant," the marking of 60 seems to make it plod. Likewise, the middle "B" section is described as "reflective" yet is marked at the same tempo, then the return to the "A" section (recap) says Tempo I, which implies a different marking was in the first section. With this being said, if the A tempo were closer to 80 beats/minute, the intended jubilation is achievable and the contrast of the reflective B section makes sense.

This anthem, with the above tempo changes, is a nice treatment of the Psalm 96 text.

The Bottom Line

Pros
Nice setting of a Psalm 96 text.
Cons
Tempo markings seem off.
