This hymn is used to open the Service of Lessons and Carols, heard annually in the chapel of Cambridge College each Christmas Eve. That event is what Joel Raney had in mind when he crafted his new setting for SATB and children's choir. The pairing of the familiar words along with bits of O Little Town of Bethlehem, plus Joel's original themes, join together for a powerful anthem.

Often a director needs an anthem to use with children and SATB choir. This one uses the a familiar English carol with children's choir singing the melody in unison alongside the youth/adult choir(s). A lovely addition to a Christmas concert or worship service, it is not too long to accommodate the children's prime attention span, but yet it is complete enough to stand alone. Highly recommended.

The Bottom Line

Pros
Very nice arrangement for children's choir + adult/youth choir.
